Choosing the right location for your family photos isn’t just about pretty scenery – it’s about choosing a place that compliments your family story.
The best sessions happen when the setting feels like you.
Because a location doesn’t just frame your photos… it adds meaning to them.
A beautiful backdrop is wonderful – but a meaningful backdrop is powerful.
Your session could take place:
When the location reflects your life, your photos naturally feel more connected, emotional, and real… and you feel more comfortable!
You don’t have to choose a spot just because it’s popular or pretty.
You can choose it because it matters to you.
If you’re unsure where to begin, I always help guide my families. Here are a few of my favorite locations that photograph beautifully while still allowing space for authentic moments.
Manassas Battlefields:
Wide open fields. Tall grass. Soft golden light. This location is perfect for families who love open space and warm, glowing sunsets. There’s room for kids to run, play, and simply be themselves. It feels peaceful, natural, and timeless.
Grace Haven Farm in Nokesville:
A stunning flower farm in Nokesville filled with seasonal blooms and soft, romantic light. This location is especially magical in the spring and early summer. Flowers add texture, color, and movement – creating a dreamy, storytelling atmosphere that feels both joyful and intimate. But even in the winter this place has its own magic and there are blooms like the beautiful red winter berries. The best part is that this farm is not publicly accessible and therefore offers you as much privacy as needed which can be helpful especially for maternity sessions and showing skin / your belly.
Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park:
If your family feels most alive outdoors – hiking, fishing, exploring – let’s build your session around that. Northern Virginia offers beautiful mountain views, wooded trails, and waterfalls. When we choose a place that reflects what you genuinely love doing together, your images feel effortless. Skyline Drive in Shenandoah is a truly magical place offering jaw-dropping scenery with soft evening light and picture-perfect mountain backdrops.
Your home:
Never underestimate the beauty of your own space. Your home is where bedtime stories are read. Where tiny footsteps run down the hallway. Where everyday life unfolds. In-home sessions are deeply personal and relaxed. No packing up. No rushing. Just your family exactly as you are – in the place your story is already being written.
When deciding on a location, ask yourself:
There is no “best” location – only the one that fits your family.
And if you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you choose a setting that complements your story beautifully.
Because in the end, it’s not just about where we shoot –
it’s about capturing who you are in this season of life. 🤍
